Volunteering with UWC Great Britain can be a fun and rewarding experience. We want you to share in, and help shape, the direction of our National Committee and to help nourish our movement and extend the resources of UWC Great Britain. 

UWC Great Britain relies on the passion and commitment of volunteers. Our volunteers come from all walks of life and bring with them experience, charisma and an eagerness to support the diverse and important work of our National Committee.

UWC Great Britain Fundraising Coordinator 

UWCGB Fundraising Team Description:

Fundraising is responsible for raising funds to support the effective running of UWC Great Britain. We fundraise to enable us to sustain our essential operations and all the activities and events we run each year. We are planning to grow this area considerably. Our income comes from application fees to cover selections administration, event fees which mostly cover the running costs of the events themselves and from donations to support the work of the National Committee and to enable its development.

More importantly we are also tasked with raising funds to help close the gap between the scholarship funding available and what each student's family can afford when they are selected for a place at UWC. Funding scholarships for talented students from across the country is essential in enabling access to an education that helps students to reach their full potential.

Role Description:

We are looking for a driven and enthusiastic volunteer with experience of coordinating small or large projects who would be willing to manage the development and implementation of fundraising strategies, initiatives and activities for UWC Great Britain. 

This role would see you work alongside other UWCGB volunteer teams to create and coordinate effective fundraising methods to attract and engage donors. You will be supported by a Fundraising Advisory Group and provided with guidance and resources for the implementation of fundraising strategies.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating fundraising activities in support of the Fundraising Advisory Group, the UWCGB Chair and UWCGB Vice Chair
  • Helping to further develop our fundraising strategy 
  • Managing our lists of targets and potential targets for fundraising activities
  • Networking within UWC Great Britain and UWC supporters in the UK to help build connections with potential supporters 
  • Ensuring the follow-up of applications for grants and donations from grant-making bodies
  • Supporting presentations / proposals In partnership with the Fundraising Advisory Group
  • Working alongside UWCGB Communications and Engagement Teams to ensure effective communication of fundraising strategies and opportunities

UWCGB Project Leader for Entry 2021 Writing Project 

Selections Team Description:
Selecting students for UWC schools and colleges is the core work of the National Committee. Our process identifies young people with promise and potential who are likely to thrive in the challenging and enriching environment of UWC. The Selections' Task Force headed by the Selections' Officers is supported by subgroups that enable us to ensure that we are supporting and guiding prospective UWCers through our selection process. The writing project group described below is a new group for the Selections Cycle for Entry 2021.

Role Description:
This voluntary role will see you coordinating a small group of current students and recent grads to produce a number of email responses linked to events in the UWCGB Selections Cycle Entry 2021. These texts will go out as automated responses to candidates from the new application portal to give encouragement, reminders and support.

Using your professional experience, you would introduce the group to the art of writing for an audience and act as a guide and mentor to young people who may not have had any formal experience of this yet and have expressed interest in writing as a career.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Coordinating a small group of current students and recent grads to write roughly 20 emails in total to support the Selections Cycle for Entry 2021
  • Agreeing deadlines and supporting the group to work towards them
  • Keeping the Selections Officers up to date with the project’s progress (max. three calls)
  • Arranging regular video calls to support the group with this process (group and/or individual, no more than 1 per week as it is expected that the group will also act as support for each other)
  • Providing active support and mentoring to the members of the group whilst they are completing their writing through calls and/or messages as you see fit
  • Coordinating the collation of completed emails into a document and sharing this with the Selections’ Officers on a pre-agreed date

Role Key Skills/Attributes:

  • Experience in professional writing – copywriting, journalism or similar
  • Clear written and spoken communication
  • Ability to lead (and cheerlead!) a small team of inexperienced volunteers
  • Ability to work with young people

Role Required Experience:
Applicants must demonstrate professional writing experience, to be described in the application cover letter

Role Time Commitment:
This is a short-term project that we expect to be completed by mid-August. After initial set-up, we do not anticipate it taking more than 1-2 hours per week of your time.

Promotion's Zoom In On UWC Project Coordinator 

Promotions Team Description:
The Candidate Promotions team works to promote the UWC movement and the National Committee of Great Britain, with the aim of increasing the amount and diversity of applicants to UWC.

Role Description:
This year in particular, online outreach to enable candidates to find out more about UWC and enable us to reach a wider and more diverse pool of applicants is a key priority for the Promotions team. To support this, we are looking for someone with experience of coordinating small projects who would be willing to manage this outreach work in support of the existing Zoom in on UWC sessions and potentially who is interested in considering ways to improve and expand this programme.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Work with members of the Selections and Health and Wellbeing teams to ensure they are prepared ahead of the fortnightly sessions
  • Similarly work with current students and recent graduates to recruit them to join the sessions and help them to prepare ahead of time
  • Coordinate other volunteers to facilitate the sessions (approx 1 hr every fortnight) or moderate and facilitate the sessions yourself (either approach could work well)
  • Work with the social media coordinator to publicise the sessions and highlight content that could be shared (questions, video clips, other content)
  • Potentially review and update content of sessions based on feedback from attendees and volunteers

Role Key Skills/Attributes:

  • Great communication skills and experience facilitating or moderating groups
  • Comfortable with or happy to learn Eventbrite and Zoom

Role Preferred Experience:
Some experience of organising events, which could be professional, community organisations, or for student groups at university for example

Role Time Commitment:
1 - 3 Hours per Week (generally 1 hour in week one, 2-3 in the following week and repeat)

UWC Great Britain Regional Champion
 

Role Description:
We are looking for Regional Champions throughout the UK to represent and promote the UWC National Committee of Great Britain and the UWC movement. 

This is a volunteer role that requires the willingness to increase engagement with the UWC movement in your region of Great Britain. You will promote UWC within your local networks and bring together UWC Alumni by delivering two local events per year. This role is integral in increasing the diversity of our applicants and ensuring every young person across Great Britain is given the opportunity to apply to study at one of 18 global colleges.

We aim to have one or two Regional Champions for each region so you can work together to plan the events and build your regional network. We will also have online group sessions for all the Champions to brainstorm and share ideas and resources. We will provide you with support and guidance for promotion of events, including presentation content and marketing materials.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Establish an online presence of UWC Alumni in your region.
  • Identify and engage with your local community, schools and businesses.
  • Organise one information event (for example Open Day) and one alumni/member gathering per year (Given current social distancing circumstances this can be done online).
  • Identify opportunities for fundraising when they arise and coordinate with our Fundraising Team
  • Keep your local schools, parents and teenagers informed about UWC with up to date and relevant information on UWC life and the UWCGB selections process

Technical Support & Web Development Volunteer 

Role Description:
Given the current emphasis and focus on distance learning and communications, we are looking to recruit volunteers to support and advise UWC Great Britain on our technical needs and provide technical setup and assistance to various projects and online based events organised and run by other Committee teams. They will also be involved in supporting our website development, and development of online-based resources to support the Committee.

School Outreach Support Volunteer 

Role Description:
UWC Great Britain is looking for volunteers to support our redesigned School Outreach Programme as part of our wider Promotions strategy.  Given the current emphasis and focus on distance learning and communications, School Outreach Volunteers will be involved in the set up and design of outreach content and resources aimed to support schools and colleges in Great Britain, and raise awareness for teachers and prospective candidates about a UWC education. Initial focus will be on developing and providing self-learning resources aimed at meeting aspects of the PSHE (Personal, Social and Health Education) curriculum, with expansion into providing academic based subject learning to align with GCSE and introduction to IB curriculums.

General Committee Volunteering Areas 

UWC Great Britain welcomes any volunteer who is passionate about the UWC movement. In addition to the specific role opportunities above, we are always looking for volunteers to get involved generally in the different areas of work our Committee focuses on.

Selection 

This is the area of UWC volunteering that most people are most familiar with, but there's a lot that goes on behind the scenes to make the selections process run smoothly for our applicants. 

The Selections Task Force runs the selections process, from initial marketing alongside the Promotions Team, through the application stage, assessment days, making offers to accepted candidates and developing a constructive relationship with rejected candidates where appropriate. We also nominate candidates for short courses throughout the year.

We are looking for volunteers with experience in education, assessment, and marketing throughout the year. In the Autumn and Winter, we need additional volunteers to help with reviewing applications, interviewing candidates, and events organisation.

Health and Wellbeing 

The Health and Wellbeing team provides advice and support to UWCGB students, families, guardians/carers, and the UWC National Committee of Great Britain.

Volunteers in this areas will be working with and supporting current students, from providing health and wellbeing support during the selections process, organising an orientation weekend for UWC students and their families, establishing links with UWC colleges around the world via the pastoral care teams, maintaining regular contact with GB students from selection until they leave UWC, working closely with the Selections task force to provide feedback on the selections process, and providing safeguarding advice to the UWC National Committee of Great Britain.The Health and Wellbeing Task Force aims:

  1. to establish a database of newly selected students with their comments/ parents comments and selections/admissions information to use as a base for future contact and activity

  2. to expand the Health and Wellbeing Team to begin to establish links with pastoral teams in all of the colleges

  3. to have an early intervention focus as well as providing casework in the event of a crisis

  4. to provide prompt support and advice to students/ colleges and families

The welfare team particularly welcomes interest from those who have experience in legal fields, healthcare professionals, social work, education, and HR.

Promotion 

The Promotions Team works to raise the profile of UWC Great Britain and the UWC movement through enhancing and monitoring internal and external communications procedures of the National Committee with a view to:

  • increase UWC Great Britain membership
  • enhance engagement with partners (UWC International Office, colleges etc)
  • outreach to schools and colleges to provide curriculum aligned sessions
  • engage members/supporters, UK based alumni, potential students and their families
  • increase the amount and diversity of applicants to UWC 

We're particularly looking for volunteers with experience in communications, marketing, event planning, volunteer management, IT and social media skill sets.

Governance and Strategy 

The objective of the Governance and Strategy Task Force is to keep the governance arrangements of UWC Great Britain under constant review and to enact or provide recommendations to the National Committee on changes to its structure that would allow it to better deliver its charitable purpose. The Task Force is also responsible for drafting the UWC Great Britain Charity Strategy, monitoring its performance, and keeping it under review.

The Task Force will also support the delivery of the Annual General Meeting and any Extraordinary General Meeting that may be called from time to time, as well as the delivery of UWC Great Britain's corporate and charity obligations under the law.

We are particularly looking for volunteers for the Governance and Strategy Task Force who have experience in governance, management, legal areas, and strategy

Technical Support and Development
 

The Technical Support and Development Team works to support and advise UWC Great Britain on our technical needs and provide technical setup and assistance to various projects and online based events organised and run by other Committee teams. They also work to develop and update our website and online based resources as well as help facilitate online-based Committee meetings.

We are particularly looking for volunteers for the Technical Support and Development Team who have experience in IT, technical support, communications, website development and management.
