£20k for 2020 Fundraising Campaign Update: All our Class of 2022 GB students will make it to UWC!

25 August 2020

This year we have campaigned for the first time to raise funds to directly support students attending UWCs. We realised that at least some of our students would not be able to close the gap between their ability to pay and the funds made available for scholarships by the colleges they will attend. Thanks to everyone who has supported this important campaign, we have now been able to close the gap and ensure each our our students this year can attend UWC!

Zero year student Maya will now be able to make it to UWC Mostar!

Thank you to all of you who have supported our 2020 scholarship fundraising activity. This year we have campaigned to raise funds to directly support students attending UWCs for the first time. We realised that at least some of our students would not be able to close the gap between their ability to pay and the funds made available for scholarships by the colleges they will attend.

We estimated we would need to raise £20,000 to close the gap between their ability to pay and the funds made available for scholarships by the colleges. With the COVID pandemic meaning we had little ability to create, or join in, the traditional fundraising type events, we have focused on networking and online communication to raise awareness and encourage the support we need to reach our target.

We soon discovered that a group of Zero years who had been awarded funded, or self-funded, places had already decided to give up their time to help ensure all 30 students selected by UWC Great Britain would be able to attend their UWCs.  Thanks particularly go to Rosie Pegna (UWC Atlantic) and Daniel Strangward (UWC Mostar), who have raised a significant chunk of the overall total with their virtual swimming and cycling efforts.  Also, thanks to the generous support of a small group of GB alumni and parents who provided a £3,000 match-funding pot, we are now guaranteed to raise £10,000, or 50% of our total by the end of August.

Zero year student Izzy will now be able to make it to UWC Costa Rica!

And we have even better news.  The two students who became the focus of our campaign: Maya (attending UWC Mostar) and Izzy (attending UWC Costa Rica) have been able to boost their own fund-raising efforts with the help of our campaign.  We have also been offered extra support from both colleges who have been impressed by the efforts we have made. With all this we have been able to sign off on both Maya and Izzy’s places at their UWCs and ALL 30 British students selected for 2020 will be able to start their UWC education.

So, a massive “THANK YOU!” to everyone who has played a part in this great fund-raising effort.

We still have a little of the match-funding left and, with the COVID pandemic still affecting plans at the UWCs and within families supporting their children to go to UWC, we will continue to work towards our £20k target for 2020 even though we have achieved our original goal.  The COVID crisis led to unexpected costs in helping students return home and we never know when reserves may be called upon again.  We also have the opportunity to ensure that even more students from this country are able to attend UWCs independent of means in 2021 and beyond.

Zero year students Daniel and Rosie made an amazing effort to raise money by cycling and swimming for their co-years!

So, please continue to support our Student Fund, which is what this campaign will become. Hopefully we will soon be able to organise a more normalised programme of events and activities to boost our funding for future students. In the meantime please do keep supporting us via the JustGiving link here: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/20k-UWC2020entry

And please do offer your time and support to help us grow this campaign further.  Hugh Davies (hugh@uwcgb.org) who is managing the campaign would be delighted to hear from you if you are able to join him in growing this side of the work of UWCGB as we start the process of selecting our students for 2021.
