Assessment Day

Applicants who are successful at the application form stage will be invited to an Assessment Day at Atlantic College.

We know that this may be applicants' first experience of being interviewed and that it can be a nerve-wracking prospect! However, the day is a lot of fun, and a great opportunity to have a "mini-UWC" experience. You will get to meet young people from all over the country, and you will spend time discussing current affairs and exploring a range of interesting topics with United World College alumni.

What happens on Assessment Day?

You will arrive at Atlantic College and spend some time meeting United World College graduates and fellow candidates. We aim to give you a real taste of life at a UWC!

Discussions and Games

On the day, you will be guided through a series of activities in order for us to get to know you better. You will have debates, play games, and explore some current issues, and you will have plenty of opportunities to chat with United World College graduates about your interests and background. These activities should also stimulate a lot of lively discussion between you and your fellow candidates.

Each candidate will be asked to lead a brief  "show and tell" about something that interests you to a small group of other candidates. This is very informal and relaxed, and will last no longer than five minutes. The aim of the presentations is to better understand your interests, and to stimulate discussion amongst the group. You will receive more information about preparing for your presentation if you are invited to the Assessment Day.

There is no "right" or "wrong" topic to present - we have had presentations about all sorts of things, from refrigerators to mince pies!

The Interviews

You will have three short, informal interviews where we will ask you questions about your application, your interests and what you hope to gain from a UWC experience. We aim to discover three things about you: your personal attributes, your intellectual ability and curiosity, and your commitment to UWC ideals.

How to Prepare for the Assessment Day

If you are shortlisted for an Assessment Day, you will receive plenty of information about how to prepare. You will need to think about a topic for your presentation, and it might be a good idea to read a newspaper or watch the news to get up-to-date on some current issues. We would also advise that you have a good think about why you want to apply to UWC, and what you think that you could bring to the movement.

At the end of the day, you will have to fill in a form about which colleges you would be happy to attend, along with your parents/guardians. It would be a good idea for you to do some research about the colleges, and to chat with your parents/guardians about which colleges you are interested
